Seems that there is another Snowy Owl irruption occurring. The owls are appearing all over the Northeastern US. This one is in New York State. This owl is very calm and cooperative. She shows no signs of stress.<br />

Joan and I traveled to Maine with friends Kim and Gary Amatrudo to spend a week photographing scenery and moose. Well, the moose were very uncooperative this trip and so we got lots of gorgeous fall pics. We had a couple of days before the leaves started to fall that provided rich, saturated colors. We arose early each morning to look for moose and to catch the sunrise on Mt Katahdin. Here is a sunrise on Katahdin as seen from Sunday Pond. </div>

We visited Elk County in Pennsylvania the weekend of 9/13 with friends Gary and Kim Amatrudo. We saw a number of elk and we witnessed some pre-rut activity. The bugling occurred in the morning and evening but it was pretty quiet during the day. </div>

I have been trying to get some good shots of falls at Ricketts Glen State Park this summer. It has been difficult because when the light was good because of being cloudy the falls have been filled with people. It was a pleasant surprise this morning as I was returning from Lock Haven to find teh parking lot at Ricketts empty! I took the short hike down to Adams Falls and the nice full cloud cover we had this morning provided perfect lighting for doing teh falls without using neutral density filters. </div>

I have often wondered why I see so many photos of the moon shot at apertures from f8 to f16. It has not made sense to me. Researching it on the internet turned up many sources all suggesting that since the moon is lit by the sun that daylight exposure is suggested. The thing that those writing those "rules" have not taken into consideration is that the moon is hundreds of thousands of miles away and that the usual f8 to f16 setting for a landscape shot is not necessary to have enough depth of field to get a crisp shot of the moon. The next reason I hear is that we need to shoot at least at f8 to hit the sweet spot of the lens. At one time that would have made sense as most of us shot stopped down from wide open to get sharper images. Little did we realize at the time that we were actually hiding the fact that our cameras and lenses were not calibrated to have the lenses actually focus on the focal plane of the sensor. Using a program such as FoCal opens a whole new area of opportunity for us. By shooting at wide open or almost wide open and still get sharp images we can now take advantage of higher shutter speeds. The above image was taken with a 600MM lens at f4, ISO 400 and 1/1600 shutter speed. It allowed capture of the fine detail on the moon surface as it essentially froze the rotation of the earth and movement of the moon with respect to the earth. </div>

Bull Maine Moose in early morning light</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We traveled to Maine the week of July 13 with our 10 year old grand daughter. We wanted her to have a wilderness experience at a young age to stimulate learning about the outdoors and to develop an appreciation of animals and natural beauty. A portion of our trip was spent near the beach and then Baxter Park, but the wilderness experience was in a cabin in the North Maine Woods far from any traveled roads. here is a bull moose that she was able to photograph while sitting in a kayak. This bull was very hungry and we were able to spend an hour with him three times that day. Once in early morning light, once during harsh afternoon light and finally in the Golden Light Hour in the evening. </div>

Nubble Lighthouse and High Tide as evening approaches</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just returned from a trip to Maine looking for Moose, birds and scenics. It was cloudy and rainy for almost the entire trip-but that did not dampen my spirits. My professional photographer friend Mark Picard once told me "there is no such thing as bad lighting-we just have to figure out how to use the light we have". I got to experience much of that on this trip. On my way to the North Woods I stopped at Nubble light and had planned on getting the moonrise over the light at 10 PM. The afternoon started with clear skies and there were a few other photographers there snapping away. The tide was going out and the skies were almost cloudless. this can make a good image-but not a stunning image for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg29vVHr6omXbGw-17tAhkLkhPxjAIjAk3xOU8rEnEm7gaXrnhLmSsah7tEWzvNlEHHE2FEZwXbSJDYn3iSNDBkpzvU2Qgf9Zy-BEOQB8BlAgA26B1L3gbn5pCuFipPliy4bnsOQYLfQJM/s1600/_D8A2859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg29vVHr6omXbGw-17tAhkLkhPxjAIjAk3xOU8rEnEm7gaXrnhLmSsah7tEWzvNlEHHE2FEZwXbSJDYn3iSNDBkpzvU2Qgf9Zy-BEOQB8BlAgA26B1L3gbn5pCuFipPliy4bnsOQYLfQJM/s640/_D8A2859.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the afternoon wore on, the clouds started moving in and some photographers packed up and left. I thought the clouds added "character" to the scene. I expanded my view by using a wider setting on the lens so I could capture more of the interesting clouds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By 7:30 in the evening all of the other photographers had packed up and gone and just prior to the rain, I thought the lighthouse had more character yet depicting why lighthouses existed.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I should have used more lens correction on this shot as the lighthouse looks slightly tipped due to the edge effects of the wide angle lens. </div>

Thursday morning brought more fog and mist and this image of a moose in a misty pond shows moose life in reality.</div>

The next morning we were in the North Maine Woods paddling a remote stream looking for moose. It was a peaceful setting.</div>

On the way out of the woods I stopped again in Millinocket for the night (I highly recommend the <a href="http://www.bigmoosecabins.com/" target="_blank">Big Moose Inn)</a>. The following morning I had intended to head for home but met friend Lee Cordner at breakfast and decided to spend some time photographing with him. We stopped on the Abol Bridge over the West Branch of the Penobscot River to view Mt Katahdin. This image may lack a central, strong subject-but I liked the reflection of the clouds on the river.</div>

I proceeded from Millinocket to the coast to visit a couple of lighthouses on the way home. The fog rolled in again as I approached Pemaquid Light and I decided to stop anyway. It was a beautiful afternoon there with the fog and the in rushing tide crashing on the rocks. </div>

Spent Saturday June 15 birding with friend James Hoyson in the morning and wife Joan in afternoon. Area of concentration was Lackawanna State Forest-a new area for me. It was a productive day--the song birds were singing and we had nice light with the diffused sun rays in the forest. I used D800, D4 and Nikon 600 through the day with some shots I used a flash with better beamer for shadow fill. </div>

Joan and I traveled to Connecticut to spend times with friends Gary and Kim Amatrudo photographing Shore Birds. They chauffeured us around and we had the opportunity to see many species of birds even though it was a cold and windy weekend. I added a life bird to my list-Little Blue Heron. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGYg4kajyXAsqh_luTt2WoO8pWWqfYHoAYZKgBT45QY1wg-QCu5ovv6T65epzewNzFkspGMg6q9bBH1uYkG6Y3TRTJo1RLIMkENCRMJlH8PA8nYFtqEQa8e3CMwpAYNjHHL_9KlgXWLoE/s1600/_D8A1944.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGYg4kajyXAsqh_luTt2WoO8pWWqfYHoAYZKgBT45QY1wg-QCu5ovv6T65epzewNzFkspGMg6q9bBH1uYkG6Y3TRTJo1RLIMkENCRMJlH8PA8nYFtqEQa8e3CMwpAYNjHHL_9KlgXWLoE/s640/_D8A1944.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

We have had Great Horned Owls near us for years. I shared photos of an adult last August. We looked this winter for the owls and their nest and were not successful. This past week we saw one of the adults and heard the young bill snapping. Later that evening I went back out and found two young ones. </div>

Our neighbor called one evening and said he had owls in his barn. He said he thought they were barn owls. Just as we arrived a Barn Owl flew from the barn and flew across the field to the woods. We thought we had missed the opportunity but went in the barn for a look. There sat a little screech owl! he posed for us and then continued his nap :)</div>

Boreal Owl</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I traveled back to Ontario Canada for the third time in a month in search of owls and other birds of the North. Thanks to contacts in Ottawa (Wilson Hum and <a href="http://www.dilabiobirding.ca/index.html" target="_blank">Bruce Di Labio</a> ) I was able to add the Boreal Owl to my life list. The cute little bird was nestled in a cluster of spruce trees. I had to crawl back into the center of the cluster to get a clear shot of the owl. It was not at all disturbed by our presence. As there is still much controversy about flash photography and owls, I prefer not to use any form of fill flash on them. Therefore, the low light capability of the Nikon D4 body came in real handy. I shot from tripod with Nikon D4 and Nikon 300 f4 lens at f7.1 with a shutter speed of 1/320 and ISO 4000. Even using f7.1, the depth of field at this subject distance did not allow for the full depth of field of the owl (notice out of focus feathers at back of head). I watched as others attempted to shoot handheld with cameras incapable of clean images at this lighting due to elevated ISO. My point is that the camera does not do the shooting and we have to do the framing, composition and get exposure right and teh higher technology camera bodies add a tool to our toolbox to allow us to get images we would not otherwise get. </div>

Northern Hawk Owl</div>
<br />
On February 22 I returned to Ontario Canada with long time friend and awesome birder Joe Demarco. we met friends Chris White and Bob Adamowicz in Ottawa to enjoy our outdoor experience together. We were initially looking for Northern Hawk Owl, Great Gray Owl, Saw Whet Owl and Boreal Owl to add to Joe's life list. The first afternoon we were successful at finding a Northern Hawk Owl near a location where Joan and I had seen one three weeks before. We watched teh owl for about an hour and then moved on to potential snowy owl areas and found none of them. As the afternoon drew to a close we traveled to where Joan and I had seen 4 Great Gray Owls. Joan was able to spot one and we watched it until almost dark sitting on a perch occluded by branches.<br />
<br />
We returned to teh spot prior to daylight and found the owl perched in a much more viewable position. The liught snow falling made for an awesome image.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had heard about Bohemian Waxwings, gray partridge, Barrow's Golden Eye , Pine Warblers and Black Back Woodpeckers being in the area so off we went in search of these birds. We found teh Bohemian Waxwings perched in a tree in a downtown residential section of Ottawa. beautiful bird and they provided us with no photo opportunities. From there we traveled a short distance to a marshy area and sighted another great Gray Owl-what a beautiful and majestic bird! We stopped at a parking area and hiked back along a trail that was overhung by trees loaded with snow-a really pretty walk. Chickadees were bombarding us as it turns out this is a favorite place for families to take their children to hand feed teh Black Capped Chickadees. It was truly wonderful to watch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We left the trail for a short distance in a burned out area and soon we had spotted the female Black Back Woodpecker hammering away on a tall tree. It was interesting to watch the bird hammer away at the tree and strip chunks of bark from the tree. We also spotted hairy Woodpeckers in the same area.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We spent the remainder of the afternoon looking for Snowy Owls. We finally located one sitting on top of an upturned stump in a farmer's field south of Kanata. It was a male and was quite far off and did not provide any suitable photo opportunities. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
An acquaintance in Ottawa alerted us to a spotting of a Boreal Owl. My cell phone was acting up so we did not get the messages until after dark on Saturday evening. So on Sunday morning we headed off to the spot of the Boreal owl. We found where it had been perched in a Cedar Tree the previous day-there were pellets and owl poop down the tree trunk. A search of the area yielded another 6 or 8 trees where teh owl had previously perched. We toured the farm areas looking for more Snowy Owls but only saw crows, ravens, Horned Larks and Snow Buntings. We headed home about noon. We stopped in a place near Syracuse NY where I know a Saw Whet Owl has been seen. We found once again fresh perch areas but did not see the owl. </div>

Joan and I traveled to Ontario Canada last weekend to view and photograph Great Gray Owls. This is an irruption year for this species and there are quite a few of the owls in Ontario. Irruptions are about 4 to 7 years apart and this is teh largest irruption in a long time. We saw 4 of the Great Gray Owls where we were visiting. We also got to see a Northern Hawk Owl. We were fortunate enough to see the owls feeding one day. </div>

Joan and I spent a wonderful weekend with friends Gary and Kim Amatrudo along the Delaware River. The eagle pair at Zane Grey were cooperative for photographing and the snow on Saturday 12/29 made for nice scenery viewing. The storm also caused many of teh local eagles to congregate along the Rio Reservoir in feed stream. We saw 14 eagles there on Saturday. I photographed 4 eagles in one tree and then a little later they decided to fly and it turned out there were six in the tree. </div>

Winter is Raptor time for Joan and I. We enjoy viewing the raptors that have migrated south for the winter months. We took a short trip to two of our favorite places yesterday to see how things were shaping up for this winter. At Liberty Loop Trail at the north end of the Wallkill Wildlife preserve, we saw migrating Mallards, migrating Northern Shovelers, a Kestrel, two Northern Harriers and a Red Tail Hawk. </div>

We spent three days in Pa Elk country this past week with friends Gary and Kim Amatrudo from Connecticut. As usual we were able to view 100+ elk. We saw a number of decent sized bulls but no "monster bulls". The rut was still active with bugling, sniffing and some breeding going on. The weather was unusually warm for late October and the elk were visibly in stress from the heat. Most of the foliage had long gone past peak color, but the Tamarack trees were in their yellow/orange splendor. </div>

Mornings in the Benezett PA area in the fall are normally very foggy which creates a beauty of its own. The early morning with fog is a great sight to see. This a the view of the valley between the Winslow Hill viewing area and the mine reclaim area. There were 4 to 5 bulls bugling as we stood and watched this beautiful scene. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUNxxPSecBfuBrJ0yjankVjECga6bQiaT-7ZqMsvGec8iXjN9MXlRFiNLRKikDYOpBqD8sT3srCCawPjY3MHbhzC10CcsSgB_CMIxjQeBrCICQ_kAFn8n9huVuRyE-rjkvu2ZHoOPlho/s1600/_D4A4367.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUNxxPSecBfuBrJ0yjankVjECga6bQiaT-7ZqMsvGec8iXjN9MXlRFiNLRKikDYOpBqD8sT3srCCawPjY3MHbhzC10CcsSgB_CMIxjQeBrCICQ_kAFn8n9huVuRyE-rjkvu2ZHoOPlho/s640/_D4A4367.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

The foliage peaked the week of October 1 at our place 10 miles north of Tunkhannock. So, we missed it. However, Tunkhannock peaked this weekend. The view from the Susquehanna bridge last night was beautiful. Not as colorful as what we saw in Maine as these mountains are mostly oak. The above image master file is 20 inches by 55 inches at 300 dpi. It can be printed crisply up to 40 x110 inches.</div>

On the way home from our recent Moose looking excursion in Maine we decided to hit the coast of Maine for foliage and lighthouse pictures. We stopped in the little fishing town of Lubec, Maine (most northeastern town in the USA) for lunch. The little restaurant was directly along the Lubec harbor. As we were enjoying their delicious clam chowder and fish sandwich, we saw harbor seals, gulls and cormorants fishing in the harbor. The waitress explained the mackerel run was in process. Suddenly a Bald Eagle appeared to join in the fishing activity. We finished lunch and grabbed our cameras and moved to the edge of the wharf. Needless to say, our trip home was delayed :)</div>

Had a fun few days in North Maine woods again at the beginning of September. The bulls that we had seen this July were no where to be found. They were in the woods preparing for the upcoming rut. The cows had their calves out in the river and lake to feed. These moose are very shy and wild. Extreme care had to be sued to observe and photograph them.</div>

On my way home from a Moose Photography trip in the north Maine Woods this past week-I stopped to stay in Kittery Maine. Being so close to one of my favorite light houses, I just had to run over there and sit and wait for sunset. I know and appreciate the sunsets looking into the west but we often miss an even more beautiful view if we were to look East. This is facing East at Cape Neddick after the sun had dropped below the horizon in the west. </div>

We were worried about the buck population around our home after the fiasco with the "pipeline poachers" last fall. However, we have been blessed that they did not get all of them. This beauty is hanging out in a woodlot in front of our home. </div>

The bucks have been hanging together in groups of four to six. This big guy has been hanging out with 5 other bucks. It is fun to watch them as they feed. The younger, smaller bucks sure understand the hierarchy. This photo is special to me because as I waited in my hide that evening I was thinking of my dad that had passed away 11 years ago at the time I sitting there. It may be "corny" but I felt as though dad was visiting me in the spirit of those six bucks. I am thankful for the upbringing I had as I was taught the ways of nature and taught how to value and respect animals and nature.</div>

Joan and I spent Friday and Saturday in Shenandoah Park looking for and photographing deer and butterflies and scenery. The weather was predicted to be partly cloudy and warm, but it was heavily overcast and we experienced some rain and heavy fog. I welcomed the overcast skies as it provides even filtered light for photography. We had fun on Friday with a couple of very large bucks and then in the evening we watched and photographed a number of does and fawns. </div>
